More on s-l-o-w commute

Lake Country motorists are experiencing a  very slow ride to work and school this morning because of an overnight snow storm that has left many roads snow covered and slick.

Highway crews have been able to at least partially clear most major thoroughfares, state highways and express ways, however, many subdivision and side streets remain snow covered.

To make matters worse, many Lake Country municipalities are facing a shortage of street salt. The communities have been restricting salt applications to intersections, hills, and curves during the past several weeks in an attempt to conserve salt.

Most of the municipalities purchase their salt in bulk through either Waukesha County or the State of Wisconsin and stockpile inventories at Jones Island in the Port of Milwaukee.

Waukesha County officials are warning that the supply on the island has become depleted and new shipments of salt from Canada have not arrived because they are being delayed by the frozen waters of the Great Lakes.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for plenty of time to reach thier destinations and drive carefully.
