The Oconomowoc common council could approve a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the city and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation concerning the construction of a new pedestrian underpass.
The underpass would be installed beneath Highway 67 just south of the Oconomowoc Parkway intersection and will be discussed at the council meeting this Tuesday, Aug. 5, according to a memo from Director of Public Works Mark Frye.
City staff has been speaking with various government officials about the project for the past 10 months.
According to the MOU, the Wisconsin DOT would be repsonsible for the structure's installation and maintenance, and the city would be responsible for implementing proper lighting, drainage, security and connectivity to the Lake Country Bicycle Trail.
The DOT will cover $500,000 of the project's cost, and the city will supply an estimated $301,000 for any remaining expenses.
Approval of the MOU is required before any of the terms of the agreement become official.
The city hopes to obtain grants and donations to fund its portion of the cost, Frye said.
The underpass would take an estimated five years to build.
