Village of Hartland - About two dozen Lake Country residents showed up at a public information meeting to review revised plans for a proposed expansion of the Highways 83 and 16 interchange.
The new plans eliminate the use of roundabouts and reduce from six to four the number of through lanes that will extend about a quarter mile from the interchange south to near Cardinal Lane.
However, the proposal ran into opposition from some citizens and elected officials who questioned the need for the project pointing out that the existing interchange is less than 10 years old and traffic usually flows smoothly through the interchange.
Other elected officials and residents defended the Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans. Proponents noted that the Highway 16 is old and in need of repair and there are traffic ties up during rush hour on some of the ramps of the interchange.
The plans include converting a quarter mile of the existing two lane Highway 83 into a four lane divided highway. There will be new bridges over Highway 16 and Vettelson Road. Interchange ramps will be reconstructed, New traffic signal lights will be installed and side walks or multi purpose paths will be added along the road.
The project is estimated to cost between $9 and $10 million dollars nearly all of which will be paid for with state and federal funds.
