Special bird call donated to Lake Country chimney swift advocate

Village of Hartland - Hartland residents near the Cottonwood Wayside might be hearing some unfamiliar noises in the coming days.

Chimney swift advocate Ramsay Schlissel said the Lake Country-Hartland Chimney Swift Group recently received a high performance game caller from FoxPro - for free.

Schlissel said the device has been modified to mimic a chimney swift call, and that she intends to use the call every night for 15 minutes before and after sunset.

"Until the birds come," she said.

Chimney swifts are sensitive to temperature, so the cooler weather could be responsible for their absence, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website.

Schlissel added that she'll be putting the call inside the chimney at the roosting site, but said the noise shouldn't bother any neighbors nearby.

"We did our part (by building the roost)," she said. "Now they (the swifts) got to do their part. They got to fly here."
