Delafield Town Hall project revived
Plans shelved in 2008, new vote eyed in November
Town of Delafield — After shelving a plan for new facilities about 1 1/2 years ago, the Town Board on Tuesday resurrected the idea with the possibility of a referendum in November.
Supervisor Russ Ackley, who was absent, had asked for the matter to be placed on the board's agenda and in an e-mail to board members proposed the board look at having a referendum seeking approval of a project not to exceed $5.5 million for a new Town Hall and fire station to "replace obsolete structures."
The move got support from Supervisors Larry Krause and Clare Dundon.
Krause said the plan has not only been "near and dear" to Ackley "but also near and dear to everyone's heart."
"The need has not gone away," Krause said. "Every year it gets more expensive."
Dundon said now "is the time to do it. The need is greater. The price is only going to go up."
"I think we need to do the referendum question this year," Dundon said.
Town Chairman Paul Kanter asked that the matter be tabled as Supervisor Pete Van Horn was also absent.
Issue goes back years
In 2008, the board endorsed a conceptual plan for a 19,850-square-foot one-story building on the western edge of the current Town Hall property off Golf Road.
That year the board was looking at a referendum in November 2008.
However, the board agreed in August to postpone the project because of the economic meltdown, a recent revaluation that caused a significant hike in the tax rate for many residents and a limited amount of time between then and the targeted referendum to educate the residents on the project.
The town had expended about $80,000 for architectural design and a consultant.
The board was looking at a new fire station to replace the cramped firehouse on Maple Avenue.
The Town Hall is a metal building that was originally a garage for town vehicles.
A vote on a facilities project was held about 5 1/2 years ago.
On the November 2004 ballot, town residents were asked three questions: whether to construct a new fire station at the current site at a cost of about $1.76 million; to construct a combined fire station and town hall facility at the Golf Road site at a cost of about $2.05 million; or to build a new fire station to replace the existing facility on Maple Avenue.
Voters said no to all three questions.
The board is expected to consider the issue again at a future meeting.
