Delafield Legion seeks camping permit
Legion wants to provide temporary campground
City of Delafield - City officials had anticipated canceling the Feb. 27 meeting of the Plan Commission since there was only one item on the agenda, and it did not require immediate action. But they changed their minds when they saw the application for a temporary business permit from the American Legion.
The Legion, 452 N. Lapham Peak Road, is asking for permission to convert its facilities and grounds into a temporary camping site for motorcycles and recreational vehicles during the Harley-Davidson 110th anniversary celebration through Southeastern Wisconsin Aug. 27-Sept. 2.
The temporary campground would be set to accommodate Legion family members and their guests who are participating in the celebration, according to the Legion's permit application.
"This will basically be a private event, as the majority of campers will be national Legion members. The net proceeds from this event will be used for upkeep of our facilities and so will eventually be spent locally," according to the permit application.
According to the application, food and alcohol would be sold only during the Legion's normal business hours and only inside the Legion post. There would be security at the site at all times, and there would be no live music or outside vendors.
City Planner Roger Dupler said that because of the size and scope of the event, there should be a public hearing scheduled before the Plan Commission considered the permit.
The license application calls for about 10 to 15 recreational vehicle sites with limited electricity available. The plan also calls for 50 to 75 camping tent sites with an estimated total of about 100 to 150 campers.
Outdoor bathrooms would be opened and cleaned daily. Potable water and ice would be available to the campers.
There would be no bonfires or camp fires. Quiet times would be enforced from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The Legion hall would be open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. and available as a shelter in case of severe weather.
