'Weather related' house fire in Sussex
Village of Sussex — Sussex fire fighters, with help from six other area fire departments, quickly quelled a house fire during the afternoon on Monday, Aug. 4, that was apparently started by a lighting strike.
Deputy Chief Tony Emanuele described the cause of the fire as "weather related."
However, the college-age daughter of the Tarry Paul Zielinski family of W 241 N 7531 N. Woodsview Drive said she heard a loud crack upstairs in the home while she was in the basement. She went upstairs, saw smoke, rounded up the family pets, and escaped the fire, according to the deputy chief.
Heavy damage was apparent on some sections of the roof near the front and center of the structure. Emanuele said firefighters were able to contain the fire to the roof and second floor living area of the two-story home. However, he said there was extensive smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the house.
He said firefighters could feel the heat from the fire as they arrived on the scene with smoke pouring out of the building. Village of Sussex, town of Lisbon and village of Merton firefighters responded immediately.
Lannon firefighters were initially called to help Sussex with reports of downed power lines and were later summoned to the fire. Firefighters from Lake County Fire and Rescue and the villages of Hartland and Menomonee Falls were called in later to help with clean up and to relieve crews initially called to the fire, according to Eamnuele
Woodsview Drive is located in a subdivision north and east of the intersection of Good Hope Road and Maple Avenue in the north central neighborhoods of the village.
Gary Seiback, a neighbor of the Zielinski family, was driving by their home at about 2:15 p.m. when he saw smoke come from the roof of the home and called 9-1-1. He said the daughter was outside and told him how the fire apparently started.
No one else was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries, according Emanuele.
