32nd Topic - Lookin Back on the 4th

Ive got some catching up to do, and my pennance means I need to address some old news .....

The 4th of July sucessfully came and went and the most wonderful notable item for me was that despite 2 band concerts and a parade, I did not not hear a single rendition of "Proud to be an American".  The fact that this particular piece of "music" has seemingly come and gone makes me Proud to be an American.

I saw LOTS of (rightfully) proud americans.   But the thing that struck me, in talking to them and reading their Tshirt slogans was that they didn't so much love America as a whole, but rather they loved the segment of America that they themselves belonged to or could relate to.

It's your right to do so, but in my mind, if you are going to set apart one day to celebrate this country, theres no point in just making it another day for "HooRay for our kind".   If someone who thought the Supreme Courts ruling of insurance covered contraception was correct could not for a single day embrace the America-ness of people who feel otherwise, then what's the point of the 4th??   If someone who thinks Duck Dynasty represents the infantilism of American thought cant appreciate a nice tractor pull, then maybe we should just cancel the whole holiday.
