The Mukwonago YMCA Board of Directors shared their plans for a new $12.7 million YMCA with the community at a press conference this morning.
"This day has been five years coming," said Board President Cheryl Berg.
So far, $6.7 million has been raised, thanks to a number of local donors, explained Vice President Rick Swan. The D.N. Greenwald family donated the 8-acre property across from Walmart for the site and the John and Loraine McAdams Family, including each of their six children, pledged $3 million to the project.
The Waukesha YMCA has also agreed to provide $1.5 million in a challenge grant, which requires that the additional $2 million needed must be raised by the end of the year.
If that money is raised by the end of the year, construction would begin in 2011 and the new Y would be open to the public in the spring of 2012.
The private Y would serve Big Bend, Eagle, East Troy, Genesee, Mukwonago, Muskego, North Prairie, Vernon, Waterford and Wales and would include a recreational pool, lap lane pool, gymnasium, group cycling studio, fitness area, indoor walking/jogging track, senior center/teen center, kid care room, community rooms, locker rooms and more.
