Crowd speaks out against OHS plan

The Little Theater at Oconomowoc High School was filled to capacity tonight as teachers, parents and a smattering of students came out to oppose a transformation plan at the high school for next year that includes the layoff of 15 teachers.

The proposal would also require teachers in seven academic areas to increase their workload from teaching three 90-minute block periods to four per day. Teachers who are given the additional workload would receive a $14,000 per year raise. Oconomowoc Area School District officials say that even with the raises, the district would save $500,000 per year.

Preliminary layoff notices were required to be issued this week; final notices are due the middle of May.  A decision on the proposal will be part of the board's budget discussion slated for next month's meeting. For more on this story, read the Thursday edition of the Oconomowoc Focus.
