A public hearing on the Kaishian property in the Village of Big Bend was canceled this evening after well over 100 people filled Village Hall.
The hearing, which was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. was standing room only by 6:15. Shortly after, police turned people away from the meeting room citing fire code. Those people filled the halls until they were informed that too was a fire hazard and they filled the lobby, library and waited outside.
By 6:30 p.m. Soneberg announced that the Village would reschedule the hearing and move it to a more accommodating venue at a later time.
Residents are concerned about water contamination from the fill-site, which was cited for multiple violations in November including run-off issues. A petition asking for an "immediate cease and desist of dumping as well as air, water and noise pollution" which was passed around this month by neighboring subdivisions had more than 300 signatures as of tonight's meeting.
The property owner is applying for modifications to the current conditional use permit as well as to move forward with a second phase that would expand the project.
