Swimmers to battle for the bronze?
Warhawks set for state meet on Saturday
For the first time in many years, Arrowhead's boys swim team will be going to the prestigious season-ending WIAA Division 1 state meet at the UW Natatorium in Madison not as one of the favorites to win the coveted state championship.
But that doesn't mean the presence of the young Arrowhead team won't be felt Saturday afternoon. The Warhawks will have 11 entries for this year's event and have five entries seeded eighth or better.
"We've got a very young team this year and there's no question this is a rebuilding season for us," said Hall of Fame Arrowhead coach Bob Jenkyns. "Our guys this year have done a great job getting to this point of the season. Our goal on Saturday is to finish the season with our best swims of the year. I think this year's state meet is going to be one of the fastest ever."
Madison Memorial, winners of the past three state crowns and four of the last five, are the favorites to keep that hot streak going on Saturday. Cross-town rival Madison West is the only serious challenger to Memorial.
"I think Memorial and West are the two teams to beat," Jenkyns said. "After that, it's wide open. I think there are a handful of teams who could be third. With a good day we could be one of those teams."
Last year, Memorial won the championship with 326 points and Arrowhead was second with 234 points. The second-place finish was Arrowhead's best since 2006. In the three years prior to last season, the Warhawks finished fourth each year at the state meet.
Waukesha has won the most state titles with 15. Madison West is next with 13 titles and Memorial is third with 12 state titles. Arrowhead has won six state championships (1995, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008).
Last year, the Warhawks sent 21 entries to the state meet.
The best two seeds the War hawks have this year are a pair of fourths, both in relay races. The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Logan Kozlik, sophomore Allen Roller, freshman Duke Bednarke and junior Jake Barry have the fourth seed (1:37.78) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Barry, Kozlik, freshman Logan Roberts and sophomore Corbin Grimes are seeded fourth (1:28.32).
The top individual seeded swimmer for the Warhawks is Bednarke in the 100 butterfly. His time of 52.84 has him seeded fifth.
Kozlik has two seeds in the top eight. He's seeded seventh in the 100 backstroke (53.50) and ranks eighth in the 100 freestyle (47.91).
Points are awarded at the state meet to the top 16 finishers in each event.
Several of this year's qualifiers scored points last year at the state meet. Kozlik had the best finish one year ago as he placed 10th in the 100 backstroke (54.22). He also was 15th in the 100 freestyle (48.50).
Barry also scored in two events at last year's state meet. He was 15th in the 200 individual medley (2:00.27) and also took 15th in the 100 backstroke (54.99). Barry and Kozlik also swam on two relays that scored points last year.
Fahey leads North
Pewaukee sophomore Nolan Fahey swam 1:44.19, posting the third best time in the 200-yard freestyle field, and he also will swim in the fast heat of the 500 free with his time of 4:47.11 as a member of the Waukesha North/Kettle Moraine/Pewaukee co-op.
Others making the trip for the Northstars are Greg Geanon (54.51 in butterfly), Keenan Acken (49.29 in 100 free) and Simon Hensen (54.58 in the backstroke).
The Northstars qualified in the medley relay (1:40.71), 200 free (1:31.49) and 400 free (3:19.19). Swimming on the relays for the Northstars are Fahey, Hensen, Acken and Mitch Grinwald (200 free and 400 free) and Hensen, Will Lewis, Acken and Geanon in the medley.
