Kettle Moraine delivers a 100 dash
Basketball team scores 103 points in opener
Playing its first game of the season last Friday night against host Verona, the Kettle Moraine boys basketball team rolled up a school-record number of points and outscored the Wildcats by a 103-81 score.
The 103 points is a new school record. The previous high total came in January of 1988 when the Lasers scored 94 points against visiting Muskego.
After the two teams battled to a 21-21 draw after the opening period, the pace quickened the remainder of the game as the Lasers scored an incredible 82 points in the final three quarters. With five minutes to play, the Lasers had a 95-63 lead.
"It was two big things that took place," said Kettle Moraine coach Brad Bestor. "First, their style of play had a lot to do with all of the points. They shot a lot of quick threes and pressed us right from the start. And second, it was how we reacted to that style that determined a lot of it. The kids did a great job of breaking the press, and we got a lot of layups by beating that press, especially in the second quarter."
After taking a 47-36 lead at the intermission, the Lasers took charge in the third quarter, scoring 31 points. In that period, Kettle Moraine got red-hot from beyond the 3-point arc, nailing five straight threes on five consecutive possessions. KM made seven 3-pointers in the third quarter.
"We really shot the ball well in the third quarter," Bestor said. "We've moved Paul Miller to the point and slid Beck Chase into the shooting guard spot. Miller did a great job at the point, getting seven assists for the night. And Chase made four 3-pointers. We did a very good job of moving the ball, finding the open man and making our shots. Hopefully this will be a big confidence booster for us."
Kettle Moraine put five players in double figures, the first time that's happened in years.
Junior Mitchell Oleson, in his third year with the varsity, fired in a team-high 24 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Others hitting double figures were Miller with 18, Dakota Perron 16, Chase 13 and Ben Varick 11. Mike Ottusch chipped in with 8 points and six rebounds.
"It was nice to see Mitchell get off to such a good start," Bestor said. "He's bigger and stronger than he's been in the past. He did a good job on the press and made a lot of nice moves around the basket. He got into a little foul trouble in the second half but overall he played very well. So did a lot of guys."
KM will return to action on Friday when they host Pewaukee in a nonconference game.
