Arrowhead junior Emily Kolbow turned out to be the third-best girls high school tennis player in the state this year, and her only three losses of the season came to the two girls who finished first and second at last week's WIAA Division 1 state tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Kolbow defeated senior Lily Hayes of Whitefish Bay in her final match of the season, 6-0, 7-5, to secure third place, closing the year with a 35-3 record.

Kolbow's only loss of the three-day tournament came to eventual state champion Lexi Keberle of West Bend East in the semi-finals, 6-3, 6-0. Keberle, only a freshman, defeated previously undefeated two-time state champion Elizabeth Konon of Homestead in the title match, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3. Konon finished her career with a 138-2 record. Keberle closed out the year with a perfect 30-0 mark.

It marked the second straight year that Kolbow has finished third at the state meet. Last year, she took third with a 30-5 record. In her three years with the Warhawks, Kolbow has compiled an impressive mark of 88-18. Those two third-place finishes are the highest in Arrowhead history.

After receiving a first-round bye, Kolbow defeated Julia Daane of Green Bay Southwest, 6-1, 6-1, Anneliese Zak of Green Bay Southwest, 6-0, 6-3, and Emily Luetschwager of Stevens Point, 6-3, 6-0.

"I guess I'm happy about finished third again," Kolbow said. "After taking third last year I was hoping to move up to first or second. It's nice to lose to the state champion though. I tried my best. Lexi played very well. My goal now is to try and get to the finals next year. I had a good season."

Kolbow lost twice to Konon during the regular season.
