At the Comedy Central Roast of Rob Lowe, Jewel had jokes! The show taped Aug. 27 and aired Labor Day.

Chances are, when you think of singer Jewel, you think of her poetic music from the '90s. She's just an innocent, sincere yodeler, right?

Nope. Wrong. Completely incorrect.

At the Comedy Central Roast of Rob Lowe, which aired Monday night, the singer showed she has a seriously funny side, poking fun of her former TV co-star.

"People may be wondering what my connection is to Rob," she said from the Sony Studios stage in Culver City, Calif. "Well, years ago I was cast in a show called Lyon's Den. I’m sure none of you saw it, because it starred Rob Lowe. The first script said that Rob and I had to kiss, but I asked if they could rewrite it, because I knew where that mouth had been. But they said no, and I had to do it, so I was fired from the show for not being excited about sucking his face, while Rob was fired for... " Well, you get the idea.

And Jewel was just getting started. With her guitar strapped on, the songwriter continued her roast by singing about why she didn't want to kiss the Brat Pack star. Her NSFW performance went to the tune of her folksy hit You Were Meant For MeShe sang, "Rob was so shocked on Lyon's Den, when I did not want to kiss him... You completely forgot we hooked up before... I was that girl in your sex tape. Maybe you missed my name, because you were high on so much cocaine. Out of all your films, I'm the best thing you were ever in."

The Roast audience was pleasantly surprised by the singer's comedic timing, but Jewel said she's actually done comedy bits onstage since the beginning of her music career.

"My music is very earnest, but I have a very dark sense of humor, and on my stage I'm pretty biting and kind of do stand up," she told USA TODAY at the Comedy Central after party. "I do a lot of skits and really strange characters (at my shows), so it was fun to have the opportunity tonight to kind of show a little bit of it."

Don't worry — Jewel says she and Lowe are still on good terms after the show taped. They talked right after the cameras went off, and Lowe said he was very impressed with Jewel's set. Backstage to reporters, he even called Jewel the highlight of the night.

"He was really sweet," said Jewel. "He said, 'I've always been waving the Jewel flag.'"
