Giving trees

Community giving trees are at Merton Primary School and Merton Intermediate School. Those who want to participate should select a tag, purchase and wrap the indicated gift item, attach the tag and return it to the school office by Thursday, Dec. 15. Food item donations may be placed under the tree.

Parents’ Day Out

A Parents’ Day Out will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Merton Intermediate School commons to allow for “kid free” time for holiday shopping, baking, decorating, wrapping, etc. Children in 4-year-old kindergarten through fourth grades may be dropped off, and student senate members will provide games, movies, crafts and snacks. Cost is $5 per child in advance or $7 at the door, with a maximum of $15 per family. A registration form is found on the Friday Flyer page of the school website. Proceeds will benefit the Merton Intermediate School Student Senate.

Literacy Night

A Literacy Night for families will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Merton Primary School. The theme is Polar Express, and will include holiday reading time, a greeting card activity (to be donated to children at Children’s Hospital), a guest reading of "The Polar Express," holiday snacks and a parent question-and-answer session with literacy specialists. Pajamas are encouraged.

Those attending are asked to consider donating a book to children that will be staying in the hospital during the holiday season. To RSVP, complete the form at goo.gl/forms/xDKDtS7b5B3L5Lkk2. Cookie walk

St. John’s Women of Worship will hold the annual cookie walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, N67 W28321 Sussex Road, 262-538-1912.

The children’s Christmas program will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, N67 W28321 Sussex Road, 262-538-1912.

St. John’s is collecting waterproof gloves and mittens of all sizes and colors to donate to Waukesha Christmas Clearing Council. Donations may be dropped off at the church through Dec. 14.

Merton Athletic Association registration, is open for girls’ fastpitch pitching clinic for girls ages 16 and under on Sundays from Dec. 4 to Jan. 15. Registration ends Dec. 4 for 4-year-old kindergarten through sixth-grade indoor co-ed soccer, third- and fourth-grade rec boys’ basketball and fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ rec basketball.
