CITY OF OCONOMOWOC - A fire Tuesday afternoon sent two people to the hospital.

Firefighters were called to 834 Goldenview Court at about 2 p.m. May 16 for a report of a fire with two people trapped inside, according to Western Lakes Fire District Chief Brad Bowen.

Upon arrival, crews noticed heavy black smoke coming from the rear of the home, according to a news release from the Western Lakes Fire District.

Crews were able to remove the two residents, who were taken by ambulance to a local hospital, Bowen said.

One resident was in serious condition, according to the release. The extent of his or her injuries was not available.

One firefighter and two police officers were assessed for smoke inhalation but did not require hospitalization, the release said.

Because of heavy smoke, firefighters called in mutual aid and were assisted by Stone Bank, Okauchee, Lake Country, Ixonia, and Eagle fire departments, Bowen said.

The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes, the news release said; crews remained on scene until about 8:20 p.m.

The fire was contained to the basement, and the cause has not yet been determined, Bowen said. The blaze is under investigation by the state fire marshal and the Oconomowoc Police Department.

At the scene

More than 15 emergency vehicles from several area departments were on scene at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday as neighbors watched them work.

Neither smoke nor flames were visible in the home at that time, but several firefighters were entering and exiting the single-family home. One woman was being treated outside of an ambulance.
