VILLAGE OF HARTLAND - University Lake School will perform its own version of Disney's "High School Musical" later this month.
The story of the musical is about two high school juniors from different school cliques. Troy Bolton, played by senior Richie Marquardt, is the captain of the basketball team, while Gabriella Montez, played by senior Elle Kudick, is a shy transfer student who excels in math and science.
They both try out for the lead roles in their high school musical, dividing the school in the process. Bolton and Montez have to overcome peer pressure and rivalry in trying to inspire others to go against the status quo. High school diva Sharpay Evans looks to do whatever it takes to sabotage Bolton and Montez' friendship to get a lead in the musical with the help of her twin brother Ryan.
“This musical has become a new American classic, replacing Grease as the iconic teenage themed musical,” said ULS theater director Rhonda Schmidt in a news release.
About 70 students seventh through 12th grade will be involved in the cast and crew. They're working with award-winning set designer Christopher Kurtz, along with choreographers Valerie Dixon and Jessica Sudbrink.
The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Feb. 16-18, 2 p.m., Feb. 19 and 7 p.m. Feb. 24-25. Tickets are on sale in advance at universitylake.seatyourself.biz for $10 and $12 at the door.
