CITY OF PEWAUKEE - Residents will have an option to drop off their dogs and have them taken care of in the city, thanks to approval from the plan commission.

The commission on Thursday, April 20, approved a kennel license for Kevin Blackmore and his father, Bill, that allows them to open a franchise of Dogtopia, which has more than 40 locations throughout the United States and Canada, including Middleton, Wisconsin.

The business will be at W238N1700 Rockwood Drive, in about 10,000 square feet of an industrial sized building. It will include three indoor play rooms. There will also be two outdoor play areas for the dogs, which will be divided by size and temperament. Dogs will be outside for 30 to 45 minutes in the morning and for the same amount of time in the afternoon.

"We just think it's really important to have separate play area," explained Bill Blackmore.." We just don't think a dog that's a 4- or 5-pound toy dog wants to be around a 70-pound dog. We think that's an unsafe situation."

The business will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Webcams will be available for those who want to watch their dog during the day.

The facility will also have boarding services. Dogs will stay in home-style crates in the same play room they were in before to create a sense of safety and comfort. Spa services will include spa baths, brush outs, ear cleaning, teeth brushing, nail trims and self wash tubs. The Blackmores haven't yet decided whether they'll offer grooming services.
