Who is New Jersey rapper Fetty Wap?

1. He's from Paterson.

Born June 7, 1991 as Willie Maxwell II, hip-hop artist Fetty Wap dropped out of Eastside High School in the 10th grade. His lyrics are known to reference 12th Avenue and East 22nd Street, an old hangout as well as an area notorious for drug busts in the city of Paterson.

2. He rose to fame in 2015.

Fetty Wap came to prominence roughly a year after releasing his debut single "Trap Queen." The hit peaked at number two in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 2015. The debut single also snagged him two Grammy Award nominations in 2016: Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.

3. He is still involved with his hometown.

Fetty Wap made an appearance at a free concert in Paterson last year and performed on the same stage in 2015. He also helped hand out 200 donated turkeys to locals for Thanksgiving that year. Fetty Wap started his career performing locally at Teaneck venues Mexicali Live and Life Ultralounge as well as at Cloud 9 Lounge in Passaic and Bliss Lounge in Clifton.

4. He found controversy during a 2016 video shoot at Eastside.

Fetty Wap's 2016 video for the song “Wake Up” generated much controversy after depicting simulated drug use in his former high school, Eastside. The video, which also featured vignettes of a scantily-clad pole dancer in a classroom, has been viewed more than 105 million times on YouTube.

5. He brought $175,000 in cash to pay $360 in fines.

Fetty Wap showed up to Cedar Grove municipal court last October with $175,000 in cash to answer for infractions such as driving with tinted windows, driving while suspended and unclear or fictitious plates. He paid a total of $360 in fines that day.
