Howell skates past Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, 5-2

HOWELL - Noah Stanko's goal with 4:08 left in the second period snapped a 2-2 tie, propelling Howell to a 5-2 hockey victory over Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Tuesday at Grand Oaks Ice Arena.

The Highlanders took a 2-0 lead on goals by defensemen Steven Mullally and Austin Kantola by the 2:42 mark of the second period. Gabriel Richard countered with goals by Aidan Brewer and Alex Opitek to tie the game by the 8:04 mark of the second.

Russell Daavettila gave Howell some breathing room by scoring with 15:41 left in the game. Kantola bagged his second goal, to go with one assist, while the Highlanders were shorthanded with 39 seconds remaining. It was Howell's fifth shorthanded goal in two games, all in the third period.

All-State goalie Nathan George made 22 saves for Howell (2-0), which will face Hartland (3-0) at 5 p.m. Monday at Hartland Sports Center.
