Top 5 highlights of the Les Miles era

LSU head coach Les Miles holds up the Coaches Trophy after defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes in the BCS Championship game.

Les Miles' tenure at LSU included some of the highest points in Tigers' football history. Here are five of them. (And here are five of his lowest moments, too.)

1. The 2007 national championship. After winning the 2003 title, it didn't take the Tigers long to win another one as Miles led his team into the BCS title game against Ohio State. There, LSU defeated Ohio State, 38-24.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the 2007 Tigers team is it is the rare team to win the national championship with two losses. Both losses that season came in overtime, but a series of losses by other teams on the final weekend of the regular season vaulted the Tigers into the national title game.

2. "Have a great day.'' On the day of the 2007 SEC championship, ESPN reported Miles was headed to Michigan. Only he wasn't.

At a hastily called press conference in Atlanta, Miles delivered an emphatic denial of the story. One that, at the time, warmed the hearts of LSU fans. Their coach had turned down Michigan.

“I got a championship game to play, and I’m excited for the opportunity of my damn strong football team to play in it,” Miles said. And then he famously said, "Please ask me after. I'm busy. Thank you very much, have a great day!"

3. LSU 9, Alabama 6. On Nov. 5, 2011, LSU's visit to Alabama produced a Game of the Century with LSU ranked No. 1 and Alabama ranked No. 2. The game, which featured 42 NFL draft picks, was a defensive battle.

Neither team scored a touchdown. But Drew Alleman's kick in overtime gave the Tigers a 9-6 victory.

It marked the last time Miles defeated a Nick Saban-coached Alabama team.

4. LSU defeats Texas A&M and saves Miles job.  After a week of rumors and reports that Miles would be fired, LSU played its final regular season game at home against Texas A&M.

A strong second-half performance lifted the Tigers to a 19-7 win.

After the game, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva announced Miles would be returning for the 2016 season.

5.  LSU wins wild game in first game of Les Miles era. Maybe LSU fans should have known what they were getting into with Miles from the coach's first game.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina forced LSU to open on the road at Arizona State on Sept. 5.

LSU's offense produced all of seven points in the first three quarters as the Tiger trailed 17-7. Then everything went wild in the fourth quarter.

LSU blocked not one, but two punts, and turned those into touchdowns and a 21-17 lead. But Arizona State eventually regained the lead at 31-28.

Tigers quarterback JaMarcus Russell led his team to the winning score that came on his 39-yard fourth-down pass to Early Doucet.
