Mark Gottfried will not be back as North Carolina State's coach following the 2016-17 season, the school announced on Thursday. He will finish out the season and not return for 2017-18.

North Carolina State Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried reacts during the second half against the North Carolina Tar Heels at PNC Arena. The Tar Heels won 97-73.

"We believe a change in leadership is necessary moving forward," N.C. State athletics director Debbie Yow said in a statement.

In the midst of a 14-13 campaign — including a 3-11 stance in the ACC and six consecutive losses — the Wolfpack have played themselves out of the NCAA tournament picture and are one of three teams in the 15-team league not in consideration for an at-large bid based on USA TODAY Sports' latest bracketology. N.C. State could still make the NCAAs if it wins the ACC tournament.

Gottfried is currently 122-82 in his time with the Wolfpack.
