How Amway Coaches Poll top 25 teams fared in Week 8

Week 8 saved the best for last, as Penn State took down No. 2 Ohio State for the biggest upset of the season.

No. 11 Houston also got upset by an unranked opponent, SMU. And No. 24 Auburn looked like the better team in an upset beatdown of No. 17 Arkansas.

Here's a look at the rest of the results:

Alabama Crimson Tide teammates come over to check on tight end O.J. Howard (88) after scoring a touchdown against the Texas A&M Aggies during the second quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

►  No. 1 Alabama (8-0) shook off No. 6 Texas A&M (6-1), 33-14.

Top-ranked Alabama thumped what was supposed to be its top SEC challenger, pulling away in the second half. The Crimson Tide got three total touchdowns from quarterback Jalen Hurts while dispatching the Aggies. Texas A&M struck on its opening drive of the second half to move ahead, 14-13. It was all Alabama from there.

► Penn State (5-2) shocked No. 2 Ohio State (6-1), 24-21.

Grant Haley returned a blocked field goal 60 yards for a touchdown with 4:27 left in the fourth quarter and Penn State upset the Buckeyes for the Nittany Lions' biggest win in the post-Joe Paterno era.

►  No. 4 Michigan (7-0) dominated Illinois (2-5), 41-8.

Wilton Speight threw two touchdown passes and the Michigan defense held depleted Illinois scoreless until the final quarter. Speight completed 16 of 23 passes for 253 yards. Karan Higdon gained 106 yards on eight carries — including a 45-yard touchdown — while De'Veon Smith rushed for 76 yards and a score.

No. 5 Washington (7-0) defeated Oregon State (2-5), 41-17.

Fifth-ranked Washington scored 21 first-quarter points and never was threatened in a rout of Oregon State. Sophomore quarterback Jake Browning threw for three touchdowns and ran for a score as the Huskies compiled 519 yards of total offense.

No. 7 Louisville (6-1) crushed North Carolina State (4-3), 54-13.

Heisman favorite Lamar Jackson and the Cardinals raced to a 44-0 lead at the half and breezed to victory. Jackson, who was replaced early in the fourth quarter, netted 355 yards and three touchdowns passing to go with 76 yards and one TD on the ground.

►  No. 9 Nebraska (7-0) defeated Purdue (3-4), 27-14.

Trailing at halftime Nebraska stiffened on defense and the offense did just enough in the second half as the Cornhuskers remained perfect. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong hit De'Mornay Pierson-El on a 40-yard slant route that went for a touchdown early in the third quarter to put Nebraska up 17-14 and energize the stadium before pulling away.

No. 10 Wisconsin (5-2) escaped Iowa (5-3), 17-9.

The Badgers snapped a two-game losing streak to reclaim the Heartland Trophy from Iowa and further established themselves as a serious contender. Wisconsin's lone score of the first half came when backup quarterback Bart Houston came in for a series in place of starter Alex Hornibrook. A handful of red zone blunders by Wisconsin allowed Iowa to keep the game close during the first half.

►  SMU (3-4) upset No. 11 Houston (6-2), 38-16.

Ben Hicks threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score and SMU stunned the Cougars for its first win over a ranked team in five years.

► No. 13 West Virginia (6-0) defeated TCU (4-3), 34-10.

Skyler Howard threw 231 yards and four touchdowns passes against the hometown school that didn't recruit him, Rushel Shell ran for 117 yards and the Mountaineers extended their best start since beginning 7-0 in 2006.

► No. 14 Boise State (7-0) edged BYU (4-4), 28-27. (Thursday)

Boise State kept its perfect season alive by surviving a wild contest. Star tailback Jeremy McNichols scored twice and racked up 249 yards from scrimmage as the Broncos held off BYU. Boise State overcame a season-high five turnovers survived by blocking a field goal with 15 seconds left — and then denying two desperation plays because the kick came on second down.

No. 24 Auburn (5-2) obliterated No. 17 Arkansas (5-3), 56-3.

Last year it took four overtimes to determine a winner between Auburn and Arkansas. This year it took basically a half. Behind a powerful rushing attack, big plays and a stifling defense the Tigers raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back en route to racking up 543 yards on the ground and 632 yards of total offense.

No. 16 Oklahoma (5-2) outlasted Texas Tech (3-4), 66-59.

Oklahoma defeated Texas Tech in a shootout that saw multiple NCAA offensive records broken. The teams combined for a record 1,708 yards of offense, 819 of those — another record — coming from Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes. For his part, Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield threw for seven touchdowns, a school record.

No. 18 Utah (7-1) got past UCLA (3-5), 52-45.

Senior running back Joe Williams ran for a school-record 332 yards and four touchdowns two weeks after he unretired from football as Utah kept pace in the Pac-12 South with the win. Williams scored on runs of 3, 43, 64, and 55 yards as Utah stayed tied with Colorado atop the South Division.

No. 20 Western Michigan (8-0) handled Eastern Michigan (5-3), 45-31.

The Broncos, who are ranked this season for the first time in school history, had their passing game clicking. Corey Davis, Western Michigan's star receiver, caught five passes for 81 yards but it was teammate Carrington Thompson that had a career game. Thompson, a redshirt senior, had 177 yards on eight catches and two touchdowns. Broncos quarterback Zach Terrell threw for 398 yards and three touchdowns on 29-of-35 passing.

►  No. 21 North Carolina (6-2) defeated Virginia (2-5), 35-14.

The Tar Heels extended their winning streak to seven over longtime rival Virginia. They won their second straight game to remain in the hunt in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division. After leading by just seven coming out of halftime, UNC turned the ball over on its first possession of the second half but recovered and got the offense rolling to claim the 21-point win.

No. 23 LSU (5-2) took down No. 22 Ole Miss (3-4), 38-21.

Running back Leonard Fournette broke LSU's single-game rushing record, piling up 284 yards and three touchdowns to power the Tigers. LSU moved to 3-0 under interim coach Ed Orgeron.

No. 25 Navy (5-1) defeated Memphis (5-2), 42-28.

Quarterback Will Worth ran for 201 yards and three touchdowns and threw for two more scores as Navy rushed for a season-high 447 yards to defeat Memphis.
