First look: Inside the makeover of Cunard's Queen Mary 2

Eager for a glimpse of the revamped Queen Mary 2? USA TODAY correspondent Peter Knego in recent days has been getting a sneak peek at the famed Cunard flagship as it undergoes its first major makeover in Germany, and we're posting his first photos in the carousel above.

Unveiled in 2003, Queen Mary 2 was the world's largest passenger vessel at the time of its debut and remains an icon of the cruise world. Built with a long, reinforced bow and powerful engines capable of a speedy 28 knots, the 151,200-ton ship was the last great ocean liner designed to cross the Atlantic in the summer and cruise in the winter.

As can be seen in the tour, the overhaul of Queen Mary 2 is bringing significant changes to its suites, restaurants, spa and lounges. The work also includes the addition of 50 new cabins, including the ship's first singles cabins.
