FIRST AND SHORT

Forfeit or not? Technically, a team can pick and choose

It was presumed that Kenosha Christian Life had canceled its varsity football season as a result of low numbers, and the first two games of the season passed with unsurprising forfeits.

But in Week 3, at the start of the Midwest Classic Conference season, KCL elected to play, after all, and St. John's Northwestern Military Academy came away with a lopsided win.

But KCL will not suit up against Lake Country Lutheran in Week 4, electing to forfeit that game.

The maneuverings created a bit of confusion in the MCC -- would the game be counted as a varsity reserve game, a JV game, a varsity game or a forfeit? As Evan Frank writes, SJNMA was under the impression it was playing a varsity game, but league officials view it otherwise.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway here comes from WIAA administrator Wade Labecki, who notes that the rules governing forfeits and situation of this nature are basically up to the conference. In theory, a team could pick and choose which games to play on its schedule without penalty, even if that doesn't appear to be what's happening here. It sounds like all KCL games will be registered as 2-0 forfeits.
