Weekend Warriors: Patterson big yet again for UWW, McGuire wins thriller

UW-Whitewater continued to stay in first place in the WIAC with a 48-6 win over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday. Drew Patterson (Sussex Hamilton) ran for three touchdowns and 51 yards and caught another touchdown pass on a 21-yard gain, with Tony Gumina (Sussex Hamilton) catching five passes for 41 yards and another score.

Cal Durni (Brookfield East) finished with two sackes and three tackles for loss overall. Matt Seitz (Arrowhead) added another sack.

In a 41-7 win for UW-Oshkosh against River Falls, Chad Walton (Franklin) ran nine times for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Dom Todarello (Arrowhead) had another score.

Whitewater headed into the week ranked No. 2 in the nation, and Oshkosh was ranked sixth. The schools are a combined 15-1, with the only loss incurred by Oshkosh against UWW.

In the NFL, Joe Thomas (Brookfield Central) continues to be a speculation centerpiece for trade rumblings, with CBSSports cobbling together a list of six contenders that could use his services. No, Green Bay is not on the list.

In the University of Wisconsin win over Nebraska in overtime on Saturday, Chikwe Obasih (Brookfield Central) had one of his most productive outings of the year, finishing with five tackles and a pass breakup. TJ Watt (Pewaukee) made three tackles and was credited with a pass breakup and quarterback hurry.

Sean McGuire (Franklin) threw a touchdown pass with 32 seconds left, and Western Illinois rallied from a 31-14 deficit against South Dakota to win, 35-34. McGuire completed 20 of 39 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns, and he also ran for 30 yards and another score.

Ben Bredeson (Arrowhead) has made three straight starts on the offensive line for the University of Michigan, the nation's No. 2-ranked team. The Wolverines downed Michigan State on Saturday, 32-23.

A trio of Illinois State players from the area played a role in their team's 38-21 win over San Diego State, including Alec Kocour (Catholic Memorial) with nine tackles and a pass breakup. Mitchell Brees (Greendale) made eight tackles and broke up two passes, and Adam Conley (Franklin) finished with six tackles and a sack.

Nate Tanguay (Mukwonago) finished with four tackles and a pass breakup as North Dakota State defeated Northern Iowa, 24-20.

Colin Downing (Whitefish Bay) finished with two punts for a total of 68 yards in his team's 31-26 loss to Kansas State.

Jackson Weber (Whitefish Bay) had nine tackles and two pass breakups, but Princeton thwarted his Cornell team, 56-7. Jordan Argue (Arrowhead) saw the field for Princeton.
