Friday roundup: Catholic Memorial fights back

There was no quit in Catholic Memorial on Friday night.

The Crusaders (11-0) faced a 14-point deficit with about 6 minutes left before scoring 17 points to close the game and clinch a 30-27 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran. Senior kicker Eric Fridl’s 51-yard field goal with 1 second remaining was the difference in the second-round WIAA Division 3 football playoff game at Carroll University in Waukesha.

Memorial junior Ben Nimz connected with senior Max Cooper on touchdowns of 63 and 42 yards to tie the game with 1:18 remaining. Cooper caught three passes for 117 yards and two scores; Nimz hit 10 of 18 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

DIVISION 1

Franklin 31, Oak Creek 28: The Sabers (10-1) trailed, 21-10, midway through the third quarter, but a 92-yard kickoff return by senior Kyle Lewis sparked the comeback.

A 3-yard touchdown by Tanner Dykstra gave Franklin a 24-21 lead with 11:18 left, and a 2-yard run by Latron Kirk-Sprewer with 7:36 left pushed the lead to 10.

Junior quarterback Max Alba completed 14 of 35 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown. Senior Ethan Wittenburg accounted for 107 of those yards and a touchdown on four catches. Dykstra, a senior, had 94 yards and a touchdown in 23 carries.

Fond du Lac 38, Milwaukee King 6: Colton Wasieleski rushed for three touchdowns, while Keon Jefferson added two scores on the ground to lead the Cardinals, who overcame three turnovers to hand King (10-1) its first loss.

Justice King scored King's lone TD of the night, intercepting a Jack Cole pass and taking it 36 yards to give the Generals a brief 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

Badger 22, Verona 14: Senior Mason DuMez’s 4-yard touchdown with 7:09 to play was the difference for the Badgers (11-0). DuMez (29 for 119) and senior Patrick Watrous (29 for 115) had productive nights running the ball.

DIVISION 2

Homestead 31, Germantown 7: The Highlanders (10-1) defeated Germantown for the second time this season, and for the second time two individuals ran for at least 100 yards.

Junior Bradley Woldt had 141 yards in 26 carries and scored four times. Senior quarterback Eric Zoeller carried 22 times for 108 yards and attempted just one pass.

Waukesha West 49, Watertown 14: Junior Peter MacCudden went off again, gaining 264 yards in 20 carries and scoring twice for the Wolverines, who racked up 407 rushing yards on the way to their second victory over Watertown this season.

Junior quarterback Robert Kobza scored twice in the first quarter to give West a 14-6 lead. West (8-3) extended the advantage to 28-6 at the half thanks to a 70-yard touchdown run by MacCudden and a 43-yard interception return for a score by senior defensive back Josh Hunt.

Brookfield East 27, Menomonee Falls 3: Senior Sam Santiago-Lloyd, who was held to 82 yards in a 20-0 victory over Falls on Sept. 30, ran for 177 yards 28 carries and scored a touchdown. East improved to 9-2.

The big blows, however, were third-quarter touchdown runs by junior Justin Parbs and senior quarterback Jake Graf that turned what was a 6-3 game at the half into a 20-3 advantage for East heading into the fourth quarter.

Brookfield Central 28, Hartford 7: Central (10-1) defeated the Orioles for the second time this season with the help of a relentless ground game. Junior Zach Heckman (33 for 202 yards) and senior Jaiden Banda (18 of 207) carried the load as the Lancers ran for 424 yards.

Central's defense, meanwhile, held Hartford to 26 rushing yards and 159 total.

DIVISION 5

Cedar Grove-Belgium 43, Racine St. Catherine’s 40: Sophomore Da’Shaun Brown completed 13 of 24 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns for the Angels (8-3).

Columbus 44, Kenosha St. Joseph 16: Josh Moser passed for 154 yards and ran for 25 for the Lancers, who finished 7-4.

DIVISION 6

Ozaukee 17, Iola-Scandinavia 0: Keigan Schmit ran for 160 yards in 30 carries and Joe Lippe had 139 yards rushing/passing for the Warriors who improved to 10-1.

Fond du Lac Springs 31, Lake Country Lutheran 12: Ethan Wilkins threw for touchdowns to Adam Mielke and Ethan Adler for Lutheran, which finished 10-1.
