Area prep athletes will be honored at Journal Sentinel awards show

Mark Stewart
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The field is set.

On May 17 at the Pabst Theater in downtown Milwaukee, the Journal Sentinel will bring together the top high school athletes in southeast Wisconsin and honor them for their accomplishments in every WIAA sport, as well as male, female and coach of the year awards.

The red-carpet event will have star power, thanks to an appearance by Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson. The evening will not only celebrate the area’s top performers but also honor athletes whose ability to overcome obstacles show a value of high school sports that goes beyond wins and losses.

The Aurora Health Care Comeback Award will recognize an athlete who overcame injury or illness to return to the field and make a positive impact on his or her team.

The Courage Award will recognize an individual who hasn’t allow personal or physical challenges get in the way of his or her desire to be a high school athlete.

There also will be an award winner for the I am Sport Award, presented by Nike, which will honor an athlete who has been committed to getting kids active in his or her community.

The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at sportsawards.jsonline.com or pabsttheater.org/show/sportsawards2017.

Here are the nominees for I am Sport Award, presented by Nike as well as the candidates for athlete of the year and coach of the year. The nominees for the male and female athlete of the year will be revealed during the show.
